‘Hemi’ is a name that makes the hearts beat – and shed a few tears – of motor enthusiasts overseas. This word, slang but also registered as a trademark by Chrysler, derives from Hemispherical and indicates the ffootprint of the combustion chamber which approximates a hemisphere even though it is actually a portion of it. Known since the early 1900s and advantageous because it minimizes heat loss through the head and allows the arrangement of two large valves, it became a cult when Chrysler advertised its use in its classics. roaring and greedy V8 products, in 3 different evolutions, from 1951 until the last one in 2003. Hemi were also V6 and 4 in line and, of course, other manufacturers used this architecture developed during the Second World War for fighter-bomber engines. The complication of adopting 4 or more valves per cylinder decreed its practical abandonment in mass production.
