Police received a report of the heather fire at Skarbøvika in Ålesund at 10.56pm on Saturday evening.
– It burned quite well into the ground. We are considering evacuating more people if there is a need, says director of police operations Eivind Klokkersund.
There should be approximately 70 meters from the fire to the nearest building. The police use drones to get an overview.
– There’s a relatively large area that’s burning, says Kjetil Iversen, fire service chief.
He says the wind is currently “favourable”.
– So it hasn’t been rated as a major hazard to homes yet.
There is a ground fire in Olsfjellet on the road to Atlanterhavsparken in Ålesund. The cause of the fire is currently unknown.
More fires on Saturday
This is the second major heather fire reported on Saturday. Firefighters spent most of the day automatic shutdown in Roan in Trøndelag.
– The fire is under control as it is now, but it all depends on the wind not turning and getting stronger, police operations director Anne Birgitte Arras said at 10:17pm on Saturday.
Firefighters are now using a heat-seeking drone in an attempt to put out several small fires in the ground.
