At least 10 people have been killed in an attack on a church in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, the army said. Dozens of people have also been injured. The bomb exploded during a baptismal service.
The attack was on a Protestant church in the town of Kasindi, on the border with Uganda. The army says the violence is believed to be at the hands of ADF, a rebel group that carries out attacks and is said to have ties to the Islamic State terror group. Reuters news agency later reported that IS claimed responsibility via Telegram.
After the attack, someone from Kenya was arrested at the church, but for what exactly is not clear.
6 million people fled
Rebel group ADF was founded in neighboring Uganda and regularly carries out attacks in the region. Hundreds of civilians have been killed since April last year alone, according to the United Nations.
In eastern Congo, 120 armed groups and militias are fighting for power. Congolese and Ugandan troops have been active since 2021 to quell the violence, but attacks are still being carried out.
