The fire broke out in the early evening on the intensive care unit of the hospital of Piatra Neamț, in the north-east of Romania. After an hour the fire was under control.
According to the first information, ten patients have died. These are people who were ventilated in intensive care. Seven other people – including a doctor who tried to save the patients – were seriously injured.
According to the Romanian Minister of Health, a short circuit is most likely the cause of the deadly fire. The health system in Romania is outdated. In addition, the affected hospital was mismanaged, Romanian media report.
