STANDARDS while the best runner up AFF U-16 Cup 2022 will be discussed in this article. The fate of the teams to advance to the semifinals from each group will be determined in the final match of the 2022 AFF U-16 Cup.
The teams that qualify for the semifinals are the winners from each group, consisting of Groups A, B, and C plus one runner-up from the three groups. If one team manages to top the standings in their group, practically that team will automatically qualify for the semifinals.
However, what if the team that ends up in second place or becomes the runner up? That is what will be discussed in this article.
As already mentioned, each team has the right to qualify for the semifinals if it becomes the champion and the best runner-up. For the best runner-up, the 2022 AFF U-16 Cup has its own rules.
Just to note, the determination of the best runner-up is seen from the mini standings (outside the main standings of each group) between the teams in second place. For now, there are three teams that are in second place.
From Group A there is Vietnam U-16 National Team (6 points). Then in Group B there is the Thailand U-16 National Team (4 points), and in Group C there is the Myanmar U-16 National Team (4 points).
The three teams have a chance to qualify as the best runner-up, or even become champions in their group. In Group A, Vietnam will meet the U-16 Indonesian National Team, which incidentally is in first place on Saturday (6/8/2022).
Then, Thailand meets Timor Leste, who is the leader of Group B, on Sunday, August 7, 2022. Meanwhile, Myanmar meets Cambodia in the final match of Group C on Monday, August 8, 2022.
In view of this, Vietnam and Thailand are more advantaged, because they can determine their own fate in the last match. Meanwhile, Myanmar, still has to wait for the results of another match between Malaysia vs Australia.
Because of this, the three teams that are in second place in their respective standings must win if they want to ensure their move to the semifinals. Take for example, if Vietnam won over the Indonesian U-16 national team, their points would be 9.
Then, if Thailand wins over Timor Leste, practically the team nicknamed the War Elephant has collected 7 points and is entitled to the semifinals as group winners. However, this is not the case with Myanmar.
If they win, but Malaysia also wins, then most likely Myanmar will not be able to top the standings, because they lost on goal difference, despite collecting 7 points later.
However, Myanmar still has a chance to qualify for the semifinals as the best runner-up. On the other hand, if all three teams lose, in this case Vietnam will benefit, because it has better points than Thailand and Myanmar.
