Temporary outdoor food service for restaurants and food houses

Restaurants can offer alfresco dining from April 1 through November 5 or 60 days after the governor ends the pandemic. To expand business opportunities for restaurants, the City will simplify permits to allow for more flexible cookout options:

  • On private property: restaurant owners can request alfresco dining on private property, such as private parking lots.
  • On the sidewalks: The Inspection Services Department (ISD) will first work with you to identify an appropriate curb space for your restaurant.
  • In other public spaces: In addition to sidewalks, you can request the installation of alfresco dining on nearby public land, such as streets or parking lots. In these cases, both ISD and the Traffic Commission must approve permit applications.
  • Alcohol service: With each of these options, if you currently have a license to sell alcohol, they can also serve alcohol outdoors.

Read the cookout rules and regulations during COVID-19.

ISD will schedule a site visit with you after receiving your request. If all requirements are met, ISD will inform the Licensing Department. Then Licensing will issue the permit to sit outside.

To start this process, complete the Early request for outdoor tables for restaurants and dining rooms online. For help applying, contact Naomi Libran at [email protected].

The City will also offer free technical assistance to business owners who need help with outdoor space design. To set up a meeting with the team, contact Lourdes Alvarez by email at [email protected] or by calling 617-487-9763.
