Temporary Outage in NS Web Shop: Impact on Train Passengers and Public Transport Chip Cards

Train passengers who have bought something in the NS web shop can temporarily not place their order on their OV chip card at an NS ticket machine. The public transport chip card network at the NS has been experiencing a national outage since 10:30 a.m., a spokesperson said.

You can still check in and out with the public transport card. Travelers can also still top up the balance of their public transport chip card at the ticket machine. What is no longer possible, for example, is loading a purchased train subscription onto a public transport card. If you buy a train subscription online, you still have to put it on your public transport chip card at a ticket machine to activate it. The same applies in some cases to a switch from second to first class. That is currently not working, says an NS spokesman.

According to the spokesperson, not many travelers are affected by the disruption. “It mainly concerns people who have bought credit on their phone while on the road and want to put it on their public transport card. But if they are already at the card machine, in this case they can buy a new balance there on the spot.”

NS cannot estimate how long the outage will last.
