Temporary Layoffs at Stellantis and Ford Motor Due to UAW Strike

Stellantis, the parent company of Chrysler, and Ford Motor will temporarily lay off 1,250 employees. The cause is the strike of the United Auto Workers union, reports Reuters, quoted by news.ro.

Stellantis said it now has 1,340 temporarily laid off employees in three states. This is because of the strike that has been going on for four weeks. On Friday alone, it announced the layoff of 700 employees at two factories in Indiana.

Ford said it had to temporarily lay off another 550 workers. The move follows a UAW strike at a truck plant in Kentucky and an assembly plant in Chicago.

Ford said starting Monday it will lay off about 300 workers at a transmission plant in Ohio and about 250 at four plants in Michigan, along with 12 in Chicago. In total, Ford has laid off 2,480 workers since the strike began on September 15.

Ford warned that a dozen production units could be affected by the strike at the Kentucky Truck plant, the largest plant in the world.

Just over 34,000 UAW workers at Detroit’s Big Three automakers, General Motors, Fors and Stellantis, are on strike. General Motors has approximately 2,300 temporarily laid off employees.
