Temporary Coaching Staff Changes at Ajax: Dave Vos Supports Hedwiges Maduro

Ajax reports the following temporary change within the coaching staff

Tuesday, October 24, 2023 at 4:14 PM

Dave Vos will support Hedwiges Maduro in the coming weeks during the training and matches of the Ajax first team, the Amsterdam club announced on Tuesday. The Jong Ajax coach will therefore temporarily act as an assistant coach for the main squad. Yuri Rose, Vos’ assistant at Jong Ajax, will temporarily take over his duties as interim coach of the promising team.

Maduro was on the training field of Sports Complex De Toekomst for the first time on Tuesday as (temporary) final manager at Ajax. The 38-year-old former professional from Almere will have the difficult task of preparing the Amsterdam selection this week for the away matches against Brighton & Hove Albion and PSV, after the dismissal of Maurice Steijn on Monday evening.

It is now clear that Maduro will receive help from Vos, who is two years older, who has been head coach of Jong Ajax since this season. Said Bakkati, who, like Maduro, was taken by Steijn to the Johan Cruijff ArenA, is also still part of the coaching staff. He will be stuck in Amsterdam until mid-2026. Bakkati seems to keep the same role as under Steijn’s leadership.

On Monday evening, immediately after Steijn’s dismissal, Ajax made it clear in the press release that Maduro will temporarily work as interim coach. “Maurice has now also indicated that he has doubts as to whether he is still the right man in the right place,” Jan van Halst said in the statement from the Amsterdam team. “Together we then came to the conclusion that it is better to part ways. Hedwiges will do the honors for the time being.”

Vos was active as a youth coach at Ajax between 2011 and 2021, after which he embarked on a Scottish adventure at Rangers FC. In Glasgow he became assistant coach to Giovanni van Bronckhorst. However, when the Rotterdammer was released, Vos also had to leave, after which he returned to Ajax in February of this year to train the promising team. At that time, John Heitinga was moved to the position of head coach at the Dutch record champion.

Due to the transfer of Vos, Rose will be the interim coach of Jong Ajax in the coming weeks. The 44-year-old former midfielder from Purmerend has been working in Ajax’s youth academy since 2020 and has been involved with the promising team since last summer, after being responsible for Ajax Under 17 for three years.

On Friday, Jong Ajax will play a difficult away match at leader Roda JC. Under Vos, the promising team had their worst start to the season since the 2012/13 season, when Young Ajax was admitted to the Kitchen Champion Division. Young Ajax is currently bottom of the second level in the Netherlands, with six points from eleven games.
