Temporary Closure of Airspace at Moscow Airports Due to Drone Interference

Moscow

The airspace at the two airports that exist in the region Russia, was temporarily closed on Friday (11/8) local time, with arrival and departure flights temporarily suspended. The shutdown was triggered by gangguan drone in the airport area.

As reported ReutersFriday (11/8/2023), the closure of airspace was carried out at Vnukovo airport in the area Moscow and at Kaluga airport, which is 150 kilometers southwest of the Russian capital on Friday (11/8) local time.

“For reasons beyond the control of the airport authorities, temporary restrictions on the landing and take-off of aircraft have been imposed in Vnukovo,” the Vnukovo airport authority said in a statement.

“For security reasons, some flights were diverted to other airports within the Moscow aviation hub,” the statement added, without providing further details on the number of flights diverted.

News agency reports RIA said the move was caused by a mysterious drone that was detected airborne in the airport area.

However, the closure of the two airports did not last long, according to news agency reports TASS said the airspace at the two airports had reopened.

“As of 10.50 local time, flight restrictions have been lifted. Currently the airport is functioning normally,” a source at Vnukovo airport was quoted as saying by the news agency. TASS.
