Temple of independent comics, “Even not bad” continues to introduce authors of the counter-culture

At the publishing house Not badly in Marseille. – François Maliet / 20 Minutes

At the start, in 2009, there were four of them. Then, very quickly, three. Twelve years later, Chloé, Mélanie and Yann still hold Not even hurt, Marseille comic book publishing house. In their room in the rue des Trois Rois throne, prominently, a selection of the fifty titles published by these followers of the counter-culture in the 9th art. They display in their catalog David Snug, Fabcaro, Olivier Texier, Simon Spruyt or even Graphic Terror.

An editorial line that has not calmed down

More recently arrived the Flemish Frederik Van den Stock, and his very handsome Buck, the first man on earth – where we find the influence of the inenarable Brecht Evens -, or the American Summer Pierre, author of All the Sad Songs . Of punk obedience, sometimes trash, their editorial line has not calmed down over time. No. It just opened up to new horizons.

“The more things go, the more we go to other worlds,” says Mélanie. We still do independent comics, but with authors working more on introspection. Our catalog is varied: we have two Americans, a German, a slew of Flemings, an Israeli… ”With as many different themes as there are geographical origins. “We are working on more modern works,” adds Yann, “but always in connection with the counter-culture. “

Nine new albums this year

So moving from a “super-exciting” project to another “super exciting”, they publish about five titles per year. But have nine planned in the catalog for the current year. “We are doing the opposite of other publishing houses which are reducing their production because of the health crisis”, explains Mélanie. This is their response to the Covid and the confinements, which have hardly favored their development.

“The click and collect is not for us, it does not favor little-known authors or small publishers, argues Chloe. You have to have our books in hand, leaf through them, discover them… ”There is nothing like festivals for that. However, most are canceled, like that of Angoulême, which traditionally takes place in January. But it was postponed until June, leaving time for the team to polish their new albums. Because this Covid will not do them… Not even bad!
