The heat in Bavaria is over – at least for now. According to meteorologists, temperatures will plummet considerably over the weekend.
Update, 5 p.m.: The DWD has now issued a thunderstorm warning for other districts in Bavaria. In the districts of Weilheim-Schongau, Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen, Miesbach, Traunstein and Berchtesgadener Land, meteorologists warned of “squalls with speeds of up to 70 km/h and heavy rain with precipitation amounts of up to 20 l/m² in a short space of time”. The warning is valid for the time being until 6 p.m.
Update from August 17, 3 p.m.: As announced, the DWD’s second highest alert level expired at 3 p.m. However, meteorologists continue to warn of “severe thunderstorms” in the region between Ostallgäu, Weilheim and Garmisch-Partenkirchen. It is still in effect until 4 p.m.
Bavaria forecast: Thunderstorms and storms at the weekend – continuous rain forecast until Monday
But even if these warnings expire, the threatening weather situation is not over yet. There may be repeated thunderstorms, some of them severe, and even severe weather, well into Sunday, warns the DWD. In the updated warning report, the experts write about today’s thunderstorms: “This afternoon and evening in the Alps and in the southern foothills there will be a few thunderstorms. In between there will be heavy rain of around 20 mm in a short space of time, rare hail and stormy gusts of around 70 km/h. Danger of local storms due to heavy rain of around 30 mm/h. Isolated thunderstorms of around 40 mm cannot be ruled out.”
For Sunday, the report says: “Main activity on Sunday, during the day in the south-eastern half. Distribution and intensity similar to the previous day on the edge of the Alps. Heavy rain, sometimes without thunder and lightning, sometimes for several hours or repeatedly.” In the afternoon, the heavy rain will turn into continuous rain, which will last until Monday, August 19th.
Update from August 17, 2:30 p.m.: The weather situation in Bavaria is currently largely calm – except for one region. The German Weather Service is warning of “severe thunderstorms with heavy rain and hail” in a region between Ostallgäu, Weilheim and Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
Second highest warning level in Bavaria: “Severe thunderstorms with heavy rain” threaten
“Local thunderstorms are approaching from the southwest. There will be heavy rain with precipitation amounts of around 30 l/m² in a short space of time as well as gusts of wind with speeds of around 70 km/h and hail,” say the meteorologists. The second highest level warning is provisionally valid until 3 p.m.
First report from 17 August: Munich – It was hot last week. For five days, the German Weather Service (DWD) issued a warning for large parts of Bavaria. Temperatures peaked at more than 30 degrees almost everywhere. The high temperatures were accompanied by a muggy atmosphere that affected many people, especially in the cities. Now a change in air masses is imminent – and according to the DWD, it will be uncomfortable.
Storms in Bavaria: Sudden weather and heavy rain predicted in the Free State
In the current warning situation report, the German Weather Service writes that Bavaria will initially remain in the “area of warm, but primarily very humid air of Mediterranean origin” over the weekend. However, a cold front is approaching, which will cause a “change in air masses” – with this, temperatures will plummet.
This will be accompanied by “strong thunderstorms”, especially on Saturday, August 17th, warns the DWD. According to meteorologists, several regions in the Free State will be affected: “Today in the area around the Franconian Jura and south/southeast of it, especially until midday, with a few thunderstorms, mainly in the wider area around the Danube, and in the evening also in the Alps.” There will be local heavy rain “with amounts between 15 and 25 l/m² per hour, small hail and stormy gusts of around 70 km/h.”
And that’s not all: There may also be severe weather locally, warns the DWD. “Especially due to heavy rain with amounts of up to 40 l/m² in a short space of time or multiple hits in just a few hours.”

Temperature drop on Sunday – it could drop by more than 15 degrees
There may be further thunderstorms on the night of Sunday, August 18. “Especially in Swabia and western Franconia, heavy rain in some areas with amounts of around 20 l/m² in a few hours, especially in the case of thunderstorms. Locally, amounts of over 35 l/m² and therefore severe weather cannot be ruled out,” the meteorologists wrote in the warning report.
At the same time, there is a change in air masses in Bavaria – and this is causing temperatures to drop quite sharply. According to the DWD weather forecast, temperatures on Sunday morning will be between 14 degrees (southern Bavaria) and 18 degrees (Lower Franconia). Considering that temperatures in Bavaria were still above 30 degrees during the week, this is a drop in temperature of more than 15 degrees. It will only get a little warmer again over the course of the coming week. (fhz)
