At least 20,000 people participated, according to EL.AS., in today’s (28/2) mass gatherings, which took place in the context of the 24-hour general strike declared by ADEDYthe Labor Center of Athens, PAME and Federations of the private and public sector, on the occasion of the completion of one year since the train accident in Tempi, in the center of Athens and specifically in Propylaia, Klathmonos Square and Hautia.
In the large gatherings of citizens, who expressed the popular demand that justice be done in memory of the victims of the Tempe tragedy, extensive episodes by a group of people who left the march and threw Molotov cocktails in front of the Parliament.
According to the police, 2,000 gathered citizens started from Stadiou Street and passing through the junction of Othonos Street with Amalias Avenue, a group of people with their features covered separated and integrated into the main body of those who had remained from the march that started from Klathmonos square.
Then, bearing molotov and other objects, clashed with the police forces in front of the Monument to the Unknown Soldier.
Arrests and arrests
The police forces pushed them away and the people in question dispersed towards Omonia, while new incidents occurred with the throwing of Molotov cocktails and other objects in the surrounding narrow streets.
So far, from the Directorate of State Security, which handles the preliminary investigation of the case, 8 people were arrested and 15 more were brought in.
Four of those arrested were arrested on Sina Street as, when they were called for a check by the “Action” Team, before the start of the march, they tried to escape but were stopped and, after a search of their backpacks, 7 Molotov cocktails were found, among including explosives, as well as full face hoods and gloves.
In addition, 2 of the arrested were stopped by police officers near Kaningos Square, during their attempt to escape.
As a result of the events, 2 police officers were injured and public equipment of the forces was damaged.
