TELUS announces Internet technology for Doig River First Nation

TELUS and the Doig River First Nation, in partnership with All Nations Trust Company, the Government of Canada, the Government of BC and the Northern Development Initiative Trust, are celebrating the ceremonial handover of TELUS PureFibre, which will enable faster, more reliable internet and wireless connections in northeastern BC, opening new opportunities for residents and businesses. This $19.2 million project will connect more than 60 homes and a dozen businesses in the Doig River First Nation, about 70 kilometres northeast of Fort St. John, as well as hundreds of homes in 14 other communities.

This PureFibre expansion is a continuation of TELUS’ ongoing efforts to bring Western Canada’s fastest, most reliable internet technology to even more rural and Indigenous communities, residents and businesses. To date, more than 16,000 households in over 90 Indigenous communities in British Columbia have access to TELUS PureFibRE. Soon, the Doig River First Nation will also have access to the same life-changing benefits and exciting opportunities that TELUS technology provides in education, employment, business, healthcare and entertainment.

The new fibre infrastructure will also serve as the backbone for TELUS’ wireless network, laying the foundation for 5G technologies in the years to come and ensuring that Doig First Nation residents have the tools they need to fully participate in the digital economy. A 100% fibre network means that every part of the TELUS PureFibra network is fibre optic, all the way to the connection point in the home or business, to provide customers with the fastest network available. As the only 100% fibre optic network in Western Canada, TELUS offers unparalleled internet speeds, particularly symmetrical upload and download speeds, using sustainable and reliable technology.

High-speed internet is more than a luxury, it’s a necessity. In partnership with TELUS, the federal government is bringing high-speed internet to every household in British Columbia by 2027. In today’s digital world, communities large and small need reliable internet access, whether it’s to access healthcare or grow a business,” said Gudie Hutchings, Minister of Rural Economic Development.
