Portuguese judoka Telma Monteiro suffered a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament in her left knee, will undergo surgery and is at risk for her presence at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, between July 16th and August 11th.
The injury to Telma Monteiro, 37 years old, occurred in the first European judo match, last week, in Montpellier, against Russian Daria Kurbonmamadova and forced the Portuguese to withdraw.
Telma Monteiro has participated in five Olympic Games throughout her career and won the bronze medal in 2016, in Rio de Janeiro, in the -57kg category.
«The athlete will undergo surgery next week, following a recovery plan that will aim to keep intact the objective of participating in the sixth Olympic Games of her career. Those who know Telma Monteiro’s motivation and resilience believe that she will be in Paris’2024″, reads the official note issued by Benfica, the judoka club.
