In order to preserve and renovate the Thünengut in Tellow, the district of Rostock, as owner, needs around 40 million euros.
What’s next for Thünengut Tellow? In June, the federal and state governments stopped their funding, which is justified by the strained budget situation. The Rostock district, as the owner of the facility, is now alone. The deputy district administrator, Stephan Meyer (CDU), estimates the costs for renovation and extensions at around 40 million euros. Money that the district does not have. That is why a sale of the estate is now to be examined. Meyer argues with the national importance of Johann Heinrich von Thünen. In the 19th century, he was a landowner, agricultural and economic scientist, social reformer and model farmer and is considered, among other things, the founder of agricultural economics and a pioneer of sustainable agriculture. Meyer appeals to the federal and state governments to jointly develop and finance the Thünengut. The Ministry of Agriculture, however, expects the district to first present a viable usage concept. The museum, which is located on the estate, has been closed since November 2020.
