Conference: Comic and graphic novel: storytelling in pictures (November 21st to 22nd). With, among others, Anna Haifisch and Andreas Platthaus
Numerous classics of world literature were taken up in the comic genre – from ‘Faust’ to ‘The Man Without Qualities’ and Kafka’s stories to ‘Moby Dick’. Comics can also be found in the collections of the German Literature Archive – but what criteria can be used to make a selection?
Andreas Platthaus (Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung) will give the opening lecture for the conference on November 21st at 2:15 p.m. on the topic of ‘What comics have to look for in the literary archive’ (Kilian Steiner Hall), and comic artist Anna Haifisch will speak with Lorenz at the evening event at 7:30 p.m Wesemann (Humboldt Hall).
Numerous classics of world literature were taken up in the comic genre – from Faust to the Man Without Qualities and Kafka’s stories to Moby Dick. There is also a long list of literary authors who have dealt with comics, with questions of the visual representation of poetic texts or with methods of visual narration. That’s why comics can also be found in the collections of the German Literature Archive in Marbach: the catalog currently lists over 600 volumes. Most of them are adaptations of literary works.
There is little doubt that comics as a cultural form need to be adequately archived and made available for research. But what criteria can be used to make a selection? What role do certain formats such as series, genres and narrative traditions such as science fiction play? What needs does research see, which comic authors and publishers? Based on these questions, scientists and industry experts, including Andreas Platthaus, Astrid Böger, Alexander Dunst, Monika Schmitz-Emans and Lynn Wolff, will discuss the tradition, forms, research and collecting of comics and graphic novels think and discuss.
Andreas Platthaus (Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung) will give the opening lecture on November 21st at 2:15 p.m. on the topic ‘What comics have to look for in the literary archive’ (Kilian-Steiner-Saal), and at the evening event at 7:30 p.m. the comic artist Anna Haifisch will speak with Lorenz Wesemann ( Humboldt Hall).
The event will take place hybrid.
