In 2015 Dontnod Entertainment released Life is Strange, an episodic action adventure game a la Telltale’s The Walking Dead. Life Is Strange managed to do well with the critics and the fans. So good that the game got a new season / sequel in 2018: Life Is Strange 2. And now Dontnod Entertainment is back! Not with a new season of Life Is Strange, but with Tell Me Why! A three-part episodic action adventure game. And Skate, quite a fan of the Dontnod games, played it. Does Tell Me Why have the same impact that Life Is Strange did? You see and hear it in the Tell Me Why Review!
Continue with what works
Outside of Life Is Strange, Dontnod has not really made a very big title. In 2013 their first game came ‘Remember Me‘and in 2019 the game’ Vampyr ‘. Two completely different games compared to Dontnod’s best-known title. These two games were certainly not bad, but not very special either. It is therefore quite logical that Dontnod continues with this title with their most successful formula. In the past, it turned out that Dontnod is better at telling stories across multiple episodes, as opposed to telling a story in one go. And they are now trying to continue with Tell Me Why.
Is episodic the right way?
A few years ago, Telltale Games was the studio that was constantly releasing episodic games. With famous names such as The Walking Dead, Borderlands, Batman and Game of Thrones, it seemed as if they had every license in the world at their disposal. But we all know what happened to Telltale. Then you can ask yourself, is releasing your game in different pieces and at different times a good idea? You can hear from Skate and JJ whether it worked for Tell Me Why. It’s the Tell Me Why Review!
