Tell Me: Devan Shimoyama’s Queer Tarot Art Takes Center Stage in Málaga Exhibition

Málaga

What is queer is the aesthetic of people whose gender identity falls outside the established norms. People who do not identify with cisgenders or heterosexuals and have always sought an aesthetic that does not pigeonhole them in a normative identity. It is the fashion and the image of the members of the LGTBIQ+ collectives that has jumped into the world of art for a long time. And among the most prominent artists is Devan Shimoyama, a fashionable American in New York who has covered the Marseille Tarot cards with a queer aesthetic. Works that make up the “Tell Me” exhibition that will be open at the CAC Málaga until August 27.

Devan Shimoyama’s paintings don’t have two dimensions, they have three, as the American glues paper flowers, cameos, glitter, backpacks or sweatshirts onto his canvases. A kind of collage full of surprises and hypersaturated colors in which he develops self-portraits covering the tarot. With works like “Lla estrella”, “El ermitaño”, “El loco” or “la papisa”, the Philadelphia artist who is barely over thirty years old sings to the LGTBQ+ collective to which he himself belongs.

Among the surprises that you find in his works are elements from manga such as Dragon Balls or Pokemon. The world is changing and new artists show it. José Mateos tells us everything in detail in the cultural chronicle of this almost summer Friday
