A brand new telescopic Xiaomi camera could just make sure that zoom photos from your smartphone look even better.

The camera aspect of smartphones has played a major role for consumers for years. In particular Apple always manages to impress with the iPhone, and certainly in recent years (partly due to the competition) a lot has improved in the field of smartphone photography. In addition to overall quality, wide-angle sensors and telephoto cameras have also become commonplace. The latter, however, is always with a ‘fixed’ zoom, such as 2x with the iPhone 12 and 10x at the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra. There is no question of physical zooming in and out (as with a compact camera, for example).
Telescopic Xiaomi camera as a game changer?
However, Xiaomi is changing that, it reports Digital Chat Station (via Android Authority). The Chinese manufacturer has revealed a physically moving telescopic camera. There is also a very large aperture, with which up to 300 percent more light can be absorbed.
The large aperture also ensures, according to the manufacturer, that brightness improves by 20 percent compared to previous high-end camera sensors that it uses. This must also be due to the new form of optical image stabilization that is included. At the moment, however, it is still unknown what exactly the f-number is of the sensor in question.
In a video on Weibo you can see how the new telephoto camera from Xiaomi works. The lens slides out of the housing of an undisclosed smartphone to zoom in. This is exactly what a compact camera can usually do. A specific zoom is unfortunately not reported by the manufacturer.
End of extra cameras?
By enabling physical zoom it can just happen that Xiaomi no longer has to place separate telephoto cameras on its smartphones. We don’t know yet when the new telescopic Xiaomi camera will make its debut on consumer smartphones, let alone which model this new technology is intended for. However, if Xiaomi does this well, it could just become the zoom king among smartphones.
