Telegram saw ‘record growth’ with 70 million new users in WhatsApp outage – IT Pro – News

Telegram founder Pavel Durov says he saw “record growth” in the number of users during the WhatsApp and Messenger outage last Monday. More than seventy million new people are said to have used the Telegram app on Monday.

The great growth led according to Durov not a problem for the majority of users. Only users on the American continents could suffer from a slower app, because of the unexpected influx. Durov doesn’t say how many new users Telegram normally gets. In August reported Sensor Tower that the app had been downloaded a billion times and installed 214.7 million times in the first half of this year.

Signal also saw an increase in the number of users during the outage. The company did not provide concrete figures. only that there were ‘millions’. Due to the large increase, not all users were able to see all new contacts; Signal said it was working on this on Tuesday.

The Dutch also texted and called more during the outage. T-Mobile reported a 120 percent increase in text traffic and a 10 percent increase in voice traffic, says the provider to NU.nl. Vodafone saw 75 percent more text messages and 30 percent more phone calls. KPN saw a doubling in the number of text messages; at its peak at 10 p.m., there were four times more text messages than usual.

Facebook services such as Messenger, WhatsApp and Instagram were open for hours on Monday evening unreachable due to a malfunction. Company indicated Tuesday evening that the failure was caused by a wrong command during routine maintenance and took the company’s backbone network offline. This again caused a problem with the border gateway protocol. Tweakers wrote an article about this BGP on Tuesday and the malfunction.
