Messenger Telegram is threatened with a fine in the millions. The Federal Ministry of Justice raises several allegations against the operator.
At the beginning of the year, Federal Justice Minister Christine Lambrecht announced that she wanted to tighten the course against messenger providers. It has now been announced that the Federal Ministry of Justice is taking action against the operators of Telegram. There are violations of the Network Enforcement Act.
Two proceedings against Telegram
The messenger does not do justice to the Network Enforcement Act in two respects, according to the reasoning. According to the law, users are able to sue a messenger if they see their rights violated. However, this is only possible if the operators also nominate an appropriate person for court contacts in Germany – and this is exactly what Telegram has not yet done. In addition, it is very difficult for users of the messenger to submit complaints about criminal content. Such a function is neither easy to see nor easy to reach in the app.

For this reason, the Federal Office of Justice has initiated two fine proceedings against Telegram. The operators have the opportunity to comment on the allegations within a certain period of time. If no agreement can be reached, the company faces a fine of up to 10 million euros.
