Telefónica presented on June 13, within the period granted to interested parties by UEFA, its offer for the acquisition of the audiovisual rights of the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League, as well as the UEFA Europa Conference League and the UEFA Youth League for the 2024/2025, 2025/2026 and 2026/2027 seasons, upon expiration of the current contract. Soccer is key content for the company’s strategy to focus on high-value customers. The company has also relaunched its Movistar+ television platform, with a new channel that will include Champions League matches.
In its semi-annual financial report, the company indicates that, to date, UEFA has not awarded any of the packages offered, and is therefore pending the resolution of said tender.
The acquisition of television rights for the Champions League represents a strong investment. In the previous cycle, between 2021 and 2024, the operator paid a total of 927 million, at a rate of 325 million for each of the seasons.
In the report, within the section on inspections of the tax group in Spain, the operator indicates that in July 2023 new inspection actions began for several of the companies belonging to the Tax Group, of which Telefónica is the parent company.
Telefónica explains that the concepts and periods that are being verified are the corporate tax for the years 2018 to 2021 and the Value Added Tax, for the period between May and December 2019 and the years 2020 to 2021.
The company, however, explains that, as a result of the inspection process underway and the years pending inspection, it is not estimated that there is a need to record additional liabilities in the consolidated financial statements.
The operator also refers to its lawsuit against Millicom International Cellular for breach in the sale of Telefónica de Costa Rica. The teleco indicates that on February 24, 2023, both parties filed a request for summary judgment once the trial period had ended. Both companies signed a Memorandum of Understanding last June to explore the integration of their mobile access networks in Colombia.
In relation to the tax claims of Telefónica del Perú, for Corporate Tax (including payments on account) for the years 1998, 2000 and 2001, Telefónica indicates that the balance of the provision for tax litigation in the Andean country, after payments carried out to date, as well as after the use of balances in favor of the company, have led to the adjustment of the provision as of June 30, 2023, which amounts to 3,065 million Peruvian soles, equivalent to 778 million euros. At the end of last year, they amounted to 3,849 million Peruvian soles (about 945 million euros). The loss of the historic litigation has forced the teleco to carry out a recapitalization of the Peruvian subsidiary.
