Tele2 to Equip Mobile Base Stations with Lithium Batteries to Enhance Crisis Response

The multi-service company “Tele2” plans to equip its mobile communication base stations with lithium batteries, which would allow for longer operation of the base station in case of power outages. Currently, the testing of these batteries has started, and as a result of successful tests, lithium batteries will be installed gradually, starting with the new stations. The total investments can be measured in the amount of several hundred thousand euros.

As “Tele2” notes, lithium batteries are much more powerful and effective in various crisis situations, which is proven by the experience of mobile operators in other countries.

“Mobile base stations run on electricity, and power outages, which can be caused by a variety of conditions, can also affect the quality of communications in a given region. That is why Tele2 base stations are equipped with batteries and diesel generators to ensure their autonomous operation until the electricity supply is restored,” he says. “Tele2” technical director Līga Krūmiņa. “A few months ago, we also had an exchange of experience with one of the Ukrainian mobile operators, and they also emphasized how important it is to equip base stations with lithium batteries, which have a much longer life cycle.”

As previously reported, “Tele2” will invest 21 million in the development of the mobile communication network, customer service system and new products this year. euro. Most of the investments will be directed to the modernization of the network and the installation of new 5G base stations.
