The mobile communications operator SIA “Tele2” plans to gradually abandon 3G technology by 2025 in order to use the frequencies, which are a limited resource, for the development of the 4G and 5G network, representatives of “Tele2” informed the LETA agency.

The company states that currently 1% of mobile data is consumed in the 3G network, and more and more customers also make voice calls in the 4G network using VoLTE (Voice over Long-Term Evolution) technology.
Representatives of “Tele2” mention that in the future voice calls will be made in 2G and 4G networks using VoLTE technology, and VoWiFi (Voice over WiFi) technology will soon be available to all customers, which will allow voice calls to be made over WiFi.
The company’s representatives indicate that 2G and 4G equipment are also located in all the company’s base stations, where 3G technology is installed, and 5G technology is currently being installed.

“Tele2” will inform customers who still have phones that support only 2G and 3G, or still have 3G SIM cards inserted in their devices, about the respective plans. Customers will be invited to replace SIM cards and phones with new ones. Changing SIM cards is free, but it will be possible to use old devices as a down payment for a new device.
“Tele2” board chairman Valdis Vancovičs states that the decision to gradually abandon 3G technology will free up the necessary radio frequencies for the development of 4G and 5G. Reusing freed frequencies for 4G and 5G will improve their performance.
“We see that similar practices are practiced by mobile operators in other countries as well – in many places, 3G technology has already been closed, but, for example, in Lithuania and Estonia, this process is currently in full swing,” says Vancovičs.

This change will not affect customers who have 4G or 5G smartphones manufactured in the last three to four years.
The turnover of “Tele2” last year, according to preliminary data, increased by 9.5%, reaching 176.4 million euros.
The company was registered in November 1995, and its share capital is 3.486 million euros. Tele2’s sole owner is Sweden’s Tele2 Sverige.
