Data from the multi-service company Tele2 show that mobile data consumption has increased by more than 400% in the last five years. Although, with the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, customers became more active in making “normal” or voice calls over a long period of time, and the number of voice calls stagnated. On the other hand, the number of sent text messages continues to fall, as this type of communication has been almost completely replaced by communication via various mobile applications, such as WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, etc.
“The growth in demand for mobile internet is huge, but this data is not surprising if we look at how our daily habits have changed – how we communicate, pay bills and have fun. The mobile phone has, in fact, become an invaluable human helper both at work and in private life. It is very clear that we are moving towards a “world of unlimited data”, meaning that sooner or later we will be in a situation where almost all customers will choose unlimited tariff plans, “says Raivo Rosts, Commercial Director of Tele2. “Currently, we see that one of our customers who uses the mobile Internet on their phone consumes an average of 20GB of data per month. The growth is more than 10% a year, and this trend is likely to continue as both the number of smartphone users grows and the variety of services that require mobile internet develops. ”
Kantar’s data also shows that smartphones already account for 86% of mobile phone users and 14% use “smartphones” on a daily basis. Ten years ago, the proportion was the opposite, with only about 12% of mobile users having a smartphone.
