Telcel Theater: A Decade of Excellence and Innovation in Mexico’s Cultural Scene

I still remember when the news was announced that in the heart of Polanco and next to Plaza Carso, a new theater would be inaugurated, the news is that it would be underground. Just as would happen two years later with the Inbursa Aquarium.

At that time, the most recognized theaters in the country’s capital were already several years old, so the thought of a completely new complex with the best technology was quite striking. Not for nothing, Federico González Compeán, then Director of the CIE International division, assured that it would be the best theater in Mexico and Latin America. Ten years have passed since then and we can confirm that what he commented prior to its inauguration was true.

In the words of Morris Gilbert, theater producer and person responsible for bringing the best productions to the venue in the last decade, “Its opening triggered the possibilities to infinity, because although quality theater has always been done in Mexico “We never had a venue like Telcel that enhanced productions in an impressive way.”

Julieta González, also a theater producer for Ocesa, assures that, “Telcel is the continuity of our work, which has changed the country’s artistic scene. And the presence of Ocesa has also driven competition from new ‘players’ and producers that expand the offer of work and entertainment.”

It was on October 17, 2013, when the Telcel Theater curtain rose for the first time with Wicked, the Broadway musical that arrived to inaugurate the new artistic venue, located west of Mexico City.

A year and a half later, Wicked said goodbye and welcomed The Lion King, a musical that brought back Carlos Rivera, after playing Simba for an extensive season in Spain. To date, this project is the one that has had the longest season, remaining on the billboard for almost three years and nearly a thousand performances.

Followed by this wine was Les Miserables, the theater classic that celebrated its 25th anniversary with the production that was presented between 2018 and 2019 in Mexico. And by the end of the same year, another theater classic arrived at Telcel; We are talking about nothing less than Chicago, a musical that starred Bibi Gaytán and María León.

In the words of Pepe Navarrete, an actor who was part of the cast, “My work on a stage the magnitude of Telcel, with Chicago the musical, was quite a challenge. I remember standing center stage and being shocked. That wonderful energy only happens in Telcel.” However, given the health emergency we went through at the beginning of 2020, the musical lowered the curtain and did not return.

More than a year passed for the theaters to give performances again and, in the case of Telcel, they did so with Disney’s Aladdin. This production was on display for about a year and a half, until a few months ago when it left the theater to welcome the musical that is stealing everyone’s attention today: Anastasia.
