Teija Kautto herself works very closely in the field of sleep and recovery when she helps families with children solve sleep challenges. He was aware of and implemented many daytime choices related to sleep maintenance, but for a long time he had neglected one of the most important things related to sleep: the bed. A spring bed was used, which did not suit him at all. Changing the bed and mattress material significantly improved Teija’s recovery and state of alertness.

Teija Kautto is a mother of three children and founded Uniohjaamo Uneksija in 2020. So everyday life is busy, sometimes very stressful, and Teija’s wish was to increase her own coping skills and general well-being. Although he had already accumulated knowledge and skills for work, he found a lot to improve in his own sleep and sleep. An old spring bed was used, which caused many challenges to sleep and weakened recovery.

In the summer of 2023, Teija went to the Tempur Brand Store in Järvenpää, where she was surveyed for her sleeping ergonomics and an individually suitable TEMPUR bed set was selected.

Passion for sleeping also made Teija interested in Tempuri. As he himself works very closely on improving sleep, he was fascinated by Tempuri’s high-quality sleep aids, but above all the individual selection process and ensuring satisfaction: a trained sleep ergonomics expert wants to find ways to help the individual and stay in touch, ensuring that results are achieved. Until now, Teija had slept on a 7-year-old spring mattress bed, the springs of which were tired quickly in use. The spring bed’s weak support and pressure points caused tossing and turning at night, waking up, and the quality of sleep was therefore poor. After switching to Tempuri, Teija noticed a clear difference, especially in her movements at night. The variation in positions has clearly decreased and the sleeping positions have been corrected to be more ergonomic. Before, Teija often slept on her stomach, but now she sleeps on her side, which is also the healthiest position for the body to sleep and recover.

– For positions other than side sleeping, an explanation can often be found in the interaction between the sleeper, the sleeping pad and sleeping ergonomics. If the mattress and pillow do not allow a side sleeping position, we easily turn to sleep in a position that is inappropriate for recovery. Bad sleeping positions can not only cause poor recovery, but also pain and stiffness, which have a negative impact on everyday life, says trained sleep ergonomics expert and physiotherapist Susanna Viitasaari.

Measuring sleep can reveal sleeping challenges

Before and after Teija’s sleep, Tempuri was measured with a sleep diary and a sleep questionnaire, and she was wearing a smart ring that measures sleep and recovery. Teija’s own experiences and feelings about the quality of sleep improved considerably, and this was evident in the surveys commissioned by Tempuri. The smart ring also observed significant changes in the restfulness of sleep and the amount of deep sleep after switching to Tempur. Even though one’s own knowledge of better recovery and alertness is the most important, everyday measure, Teija still signs the findings of the device.

– I sleep clearly better, the restorability of sleep is more efficient and I am more refreshed during the day, summarizes Teija.

Sleep should not be overdone

Things related to the sleeping environment, such as a suitably cool temperature in the bedroom, were well under the sleep professional’s control, but the heat still challenged sleep. Teija didn’t want to sleep without a blanket, so a clear need was found for Tempuri’s heat-regulating down blanket – and it has been the perfect choice. Get off the sleeping pills

– I have been using sleeping pills since 2011. The difference to the current situation is that I have stopped using sleeping pills. I have noticed that I sleep very well without medicinal means. I use the Oura ring, which has recently measured very good results without even a single sleeping pill, Teija says with relief.

The effect of sleeping pills on sleep and its restorability is contradictory. Their tiring effect can make it easier to fall asleep and reduce nighttime awakenings, but they can have effects that weaken sleep quality and daytime alertness. It is more profitable, but of course also requires patience, to improve sleep with non-medicated means. Sleep disorders can be caused by choices during the day that have a negative effect on sleep, poor sleep ergonomics, or an illness that weakens your health.

In order to achieve restorative sleep, it’s not worth correcting, but tackling the factors that cause bad sleep. In this way, you can also ensure a more sustainable change for recovery and well-being.
