The Tehran prosecutor has issued this Monday an arrest warrant against 73 suspects, including former US President Donald Trump and former Secretary of State of his Administration Mike Pompeo, for their alleged responsibility in the case of the death of the commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Qasem Soleimani, killed in a US attack in Baghdad in 2020.
Judge Ali Salehi has indicated that, after collecting more than 12,000 court documents against the defendants, he has summoned several dozen US citizens to trial, while suspending prosecution against 74 others due to lack of concrete evidence.
In the case of Trump, he has stated that he openly assumed his responsibility “in the face of this terrorist crime against humanity” and, despite the fact that Tehran is committed to international obligations such as the principle of immunity of government officials, he has criticized that the US judicial system refused to prosecute the US defendants, advocating impunity for some crimes.
This is why Salehi has pointed out that the investigation has determined that “this terrorist operation was decided and implemented at the highest level by political, military and intelligence officials of the United States.”
In addition, the prosecutor has explained that he has sent requests for judicial cooperation to the competent authorities of several countries that could have played a role in Soleimani’s death, reports the Mehr news agency.
Salehi has also indicated that several meetings have been held with the authorities of Iraq, where the attack took place, in which both countries have expressed “their determination to persecute and punish the perpetrators and those involved in the commission of the crime.”
An Iraqi court also issued an arrest warrant against Trump in January 2021 for ordering the bombing carried out a year earlier in the country’s capital, Baghdad, which resulted in the death of Soleimani.
