A video broadcast makes him the main suspect in the liquidation of the engineer of the “nuclear” program
Yesterday, the Iranian media revealed a video of recorded confessions of the former official in the Ministry of Defense, Ali Reza Akbari, in which he refers to providing information about the engineer of the Iranian nuclear program, Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, who was assassinated in the suburbs of Tehran at the end of November 2020.
The disclosure of the recorded confessions came after the authorities announced that Akbari had been sentenced to death on charges of espionage for Britain, in what appeared to be a link between the two cases.
With this video, Akbari is the most prominent suspect in the Fakhri Zadeh case, whom Iran accused Israel of liquidating.
In the clipped video recording, Akbari presents the beginning of his “recruitment” into the British intelligence service, on the sidelines of a diplomatic meeting in Tehran dating back to 2004.
Akbari held several positions in the security and military agencies, the most important of which was the position of Deputy Minister of Defense for International Affairs when Ali Shamkhani, the current Secretary-General of the Supreme National Security Council, held that position, which raised questions about his continuity in the position.
Akbari indicates that he provided information about Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, the research affairs official at the Iranian Ministry of Defense, who is described as the most important nuclear scientist in Iran. In the recording, Akbari declares: “I asked if someone, let’s say Dr. Fakhrizadeh, could participate in the project. I said why can’t he?”
Akbari was arrested in 2019, a year before the killing of Fakhri Zadeh, whose name was associated with the “Amad” project, which the Iranian intelligence services are preparing, the Iranian project that they stopped in order to develop nuclear weapons before 2003.
