It is a great achievement the French artist with the hat performed in a California prison: involving a group of the country’s toughest prisoners in creating a large work of art in the very heart of the penitentiary located in California. JR made a film from it, “Tehachapi”, named after that prison, which will be broadcast in New York, at the Maysles Documentary Center in Harlem, on Wednesday October 23 (at 6:45 pm, tickets here).
The screening will be followed by a cocktail accessible to all viewers. The opportunity to consider this slightly crazy project, which questions the limits of the American prison universe, and combines what has always been a special interest of the artist: the use of photography, cutting and collage to convey a message of tolerance and relationships with others.
