Teens Arrested for Breaking into Moving NYC Subway Train and Accessing Locomotive Controls

NEW YORK — A group of teenagers were arrested after breaking into a cabin aboard a moving New York City subway train, giving them access to the locomotive’s controls, according to police.

The teens, all minors, were able to enter an unauthorized area in the back of a northbound 4 train while it was traveling between the 161st and 167th Street stations in the Bronx after 7 p.m. on Saturday, the police said. police. It was unclear if the teens somehow obtained the key to the cabin or if they were able to make one that would open the door.

Once inside, the train operator “realized there had been vandalism” and immediately reported it, MTA spokesman Aaron Donovan said. The train was stopped at the next station while dispatchers contacted police.

The four male suspects, a 14-year-old, a 16-year-old and two 17-year-olds, were detained on the train, police said. They face possible charges including reckless endangerment, tampering and criminal trespass.

The MTA said the teens never had the ability to control or impact train operations.
