While social networks are fully part of our daily lives, Diploméo has just carried out a survey on their use by young people. Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook, TikTok… How do young people relate to social networks?
Most Used Instagram
Today, Instagram is used by 82% of young people, it is the most popular social network. Not far behind, Snapchat arouses a lot of enthusiasm with its ephemeral photos and videos. 74% of young people use it.
Most uninstalled Facebook
Very popular and number one a few years ago, Facebook continues to lose ground on its competitors. It was the most uninstalled social network. In fact, Facebook is in free fall … After being used by 93% of young people at the end of 2017, then 67% at the end of 2018 and 61% at the end of 2019, Facebook is no longer appealing to young people as much. This year, 54% of them say they use Facebook.
TikTok drilling
The TikTok social network is hugely popular with young people. This Chinese application allows teenagers to post videos of a few seconds in which they sing in playback, dance to music or take up challenges.
Publicity
Last year only 10% of young people used TikTok against 38% this year. Very popular, the Chinese video sharing application has been a hit by occupying and entertaining people during the first confinement, in March and April 2020.
Why do young people use social networks?
85% of young people use it to chat with their friends, 74% to pass the time and 58% to relax.
Social networks are also used to get information for 73% of young people. The most used for information is Instagram (36%). We find just behind Twitter (29%) and Facebook (28%).
Unsurprisingly, the smartphone comes first. Today, the smartphone is essential for young people.
How dependent are they?
- 42% think they can do without it for a few hours or days
- 28% for a few weeks or months
- 16% for several years
- 13% think they can do without it indefinitely
- 3% absolutely cannot do without it
Cyberbullying has already affected 1 in 5 young people
In general, young people have been harassed by unknown (58%), but also by people they know or with whom they spend their days. First of all, their classmates (39%), but also virtual knowledge (20%), as well as their friends (17%). Girls are harassed more (45%) by their classmates than boys (28%).
What about privacy in all of this?
To protect yourself from cyberstalking and protect your privacy, account settings can be adapted. But most of the time, young people do not reveal too much of their private life on the networks. According to the survey, 7 in 10 young people do not share their privacy on social media. Those who do so share it on Instagram (23%) and Snapchat (18%). Finally, only 6% of respondents share it on Facebook.
