Teenagers get life in prison for ‘sadistic’ murder

It was on February 11, 2023 that 16-year-old Brianna Ghey was murdered in a park in Cheshire in northwest England. The murder was, according to the judge in the case, well planned, exceptionally brutal and partly motivated by the fact that Brianna Ghey was transgender, writes The Guardian.

Ghey was stabbed 28 times before the attack was interrupted by a passing couple walking their dogs.

The two teenagers, a girl and a boy, are 16 years old. They were sentenced Friday to life in prison for the murder of Brianna Ghey. This means at least 22 years for the girl and 20 years for the boy. The girl is described by the judge, Justice Yip, as “the driving force” behind the murder.

In addition to Brianna Ghey, the teenagers wrote a list of names of other people they wanted to kill, all children, whom they did not like for various reasons. They focused on Brianna, because they failed to deceive another of the people on the list, writes The Guardian.

Police found the knife with Brianna’s blood and dna in one of the teenagers’ bedrooms. None of the perpetrators has previously been in contact with the police, writes BBC.

According to British media, the girl, who is singled out as the most driving force in the murder, was a friend of Brianna Ghey. She has also admitted to trying to poison Brianna Ghey a few weeks before the murder in the park.

– You chose Brianna because you both saw her as an easy target, the judge told the perpetrators during the trial, writes The Guardian.
