Dutch Skating Star Angel Daleman Shines at World Cup, Leaving Beijing with a Backpack Full of Dreams
At just 17 years old, Angel Daleman is already making waves in the world of speed skating. After a whirlwind two weeks, she’s wrapping up an incredible run at the World Cup in Beijing, taking home three medals and a heart brimming with pride.
"I wasn’t thinking anything at all," Daleman said, reflecting on her successful weekend. "I was just focused on having a good race and hoping to skate better than I had last week in Nagano." Her approach paid off. Daleman secured bronze in both the 1,000 meter and 1,500 meter races, and capped off her performance with a gold-medal win in the team sprint.
Her journey began four weeks ago with a decisive qualification for the World Cup, a moment that set her on the path to this remarkable achievement. Now, as she prepares to return home, her backpack isn’t just filled with clothes; it’s packed with experience, new experiences, and the satisfaction of exceeding her own expectations.
A gifted multi-sport athlete, Daleman participates in both the long track and short track skating disciplines. "It’s a lot more relaxed on the long track," she notes, contrasting it with the fast-paced world of short track. "I had almost no pressure this weekend. In short track it happens so quickly."
Daleman’s dedication shines through in her training. Despite not officially being part of the Essent Team due to age restrictions, she embraces their support, comparing it to a family. "Even though I’m actually under Niels Kerstholt (national coach for short track), Dave Versteeg will always be my coach. Nobody’s going to interfere with that," she shares, innocently emphasizing her close bond with her mentor.
Despite her successes on the long track, Daleman maintains her love for the short track. She turns heads with her custom pink blades, the only skater on international ice with such a personal touch, and the only skater who has left a World Cup event with more than just success表明a commitment to her craft.
Her wide smile and youthful energy belie a depth of character and ambition. "Yes, I’m 17, but on a weekend like that you don’t think about that," she explains. "Ultimately you’re competing against everyone, including top skaters like Miho Takagi and Jutta Leerdam."
Her training program with her Essent teammates is occasionally laced with playful teasing and reminders of her youth: "They ask me to sit in the play corner, for example,"☆☆☆☆☆’ but her light-heartedness shines through, hinting at her ability to handle pressure and maintain her spirit despite being surrounded by seasoned veterans.
Daleman has proven herself on both long and short track, leaving her with a difficult choice; a decision she doesn’t feel rushed to make. The future holds the National Sprint Championships at the end of December and both National Championships and the European Short Track Championships later in January.
"Although I saw that the World Cup will be held in Calgary again next week," Daleman added, showcasing her awareness of the international circuit. This young skater is just getting started.
