How much of an impact on Western popular culture can a group of anthropomorphic teenage turtles who know martial arts and eat almost exclusively pizza? A lot, clearly. Created in 1984 by comic book artists Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, the teenage mutant ninja turtles Raphael, Leonardo, Donatello, and Michelangelo became a worldwide phenomenon thanks to their late-’80s animated series, fueled by Playmates Toys and the idea that They could sell many toys inspired by the cute reptiles. Wasting no time in seeing the gold mine they had in their hands, the adventures of Master Splinter’s students/sons were brought to the big screen for the first time in 1990 with great success. More adaptations of varying quality soon followed, coming to a halt in 2016 when Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows failed to gross enough. Now, 7 years later, the turtles return to the movies, renewed and ready to dazzle new generations, with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant mayhem Cowabunga!
