A 14-year-old boy died after falling from a New York City subway train. He was attempting to climb onto the roof of the moving device, a dangerous tendency dubbed “subway surfing.”
The boy fell from a train in the borough of Queens, New York. He suffered a fatal head injury, the daily reported. The Mirror.
He was then taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
His identity remains unknown. Authorities do not know if he was accompanied or alone.
This death marks the seventh this year in connection with this popular new trend of “subway surfing” on social networks, in particular on TikTok, where teenagers have fun climbing on the roof of trains, according to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority ( MTA). These videos had already produced millions of views at the time of this writing.
Last week, another teenager, Brian Crespo, also lost his life while practicing “subway surfing”, and his friend was seriously injured.
According to information from the MTA, 52 people used public transit while staying off the train in February 2023, and 58 cases were noted in January 2023. These are numbers that send chills to the mayor of New York, Eric Adams.
The latter has also asked the management of TikTok to remove the videos that promote this dangerous activity from its platform. TikTok sent its condolences to the relatives, before saying that these videos will be removed from the social network when they are found.
