Teen Stabbed to Death at New Year’s Eve Fireworks in London’s Primrose Hill

London –

A 16-year-old boy was stabbed to death on the top of a hill overlooking central London as a crowd gathered to watch New Year’s Eve fireworks, police said Monday.

Detective Chief Inspector Geoff Grogan said Harry Bateman was with friends in Primrose Hill shortly before midnight when he became involved in a dispute which turned deadly. Efforts to revive him failed.

“He was young and had the rest of his life ahead of him,” Grosjean said. “Understandably, his family is devastated.”

Police said a boy of the same age was arrested on suspicion of murder and detained.

Investigators were seeking information from witnesses who were among hundreds of people who gathered on the hill next to Regent’s Park. It is surrounded by streets of wealthy homes and is located near many public housing towers.

The Royal Parks noted on its website that the hill was historically a place where duels and prize fights were fought.

The park normally closes at night, but was scheduled to remain open until 1 a.m. Monday to watch the city’s fireworks along the Thames River, 3 miles (5 kilometers) to the south.

Primrose Hill was closed on Monday as officers fanned out searching grass for evidence and a forensics team worked near where the stabbing occurred.
