Sea view

On Wednesday, two 16-year-olds were sentenced for the much-discussed murder of their peer Brianna Ghey in England in February.

After the verdict at Manchester Crown Court, prosecutors said it was one of the most disturbing cases they had brought to court:

– The planning, the violence and the age of those convicted of murder are beyond comprehension.

Both 16-year-olds themselves deny having killed her.

Then on torture

For weeks, the two, a boy and a girl, had been planning the murder, the court said. In thousands of messages on WhatsApp, the friends shared their dark thoughts and fascination with killers, violence, torture and death, writes Sky News.

In court, the girl explained that she had known Brianna, who was born a boy but lived as a girl, for a few months. However, the boy had only met her the day before, he explained in court.

All three were pupils at various schools in the Warrington area. In court, the two 16-year-olds were presented as highly functioning teenagers with a “normal background” without previous involvement with the police, writes BBC.

Nevertheless, they had developed a “thirst to kill”, according to the court:

The boy convicted of murder referred to his girlfriend as “obsessed” with serial killers, both are said to have sought information about murder and torture on the dark web where people operate anonymously and encrypted.

On WhatsApp, they discussed different ways to kill Brianna. They allegedly had a list of several peers they wanted to kill.

According to the chat, they should have first considered killing a boy before deciding to kill Brianna, who they thought would be easier to kill.

In the chat, they referred to Brianna as “it” and wrote that they would see if “the would scream like a man or a girl”, writes The Guardian.

But according to the convicted murderers, the messages were just “dark fantasies”. Both denied killing her and blamed each other for the stabbing, according to Sky News.

When Brianna Ghey left home on February 11, she thought she was going to meet a friend.

Two hours later, in Linear Park outside Warrington, she was attacked and stabbed with a hunting knife.

28 times in the head, neck, back and chest.

The body was found by passers-by in a park outside the English town of Warrington.

The case received a lot of attention both in the UK and the rest of the world.

Don’t look at each other

Special measures were taken in court so that the accused boy could not have to explain himself orally. Instead, he had the questions read out and answered in text.

The defendants, who have been friends since they were 11 years old, did not look at each other throughout the trial. After they were charged, they have turned against each other, reports say The Telegraph.

First, the boy must have tried to assert his innocence. He explained that he turned towards a tree to pee when his friend stabbed Brianna. But when the prosecutor presented evidence that his hunting knife was found with Brianna’s blood in his bedroom, and when his shoes and clothes also had traces of her blood, the defendant is said to have stopped speaking.

The jury was told that they did not need to prove which of the two did the stabbing for them both to be convicted of murder.

Both were convicted.

The sentencing will not be until next month, but the judge has already said that the two will get life in prison, and that it is only a question of what kind of minimum time they will get.

More focus on mental health

Brianna was open about being transgender, and shared her everyday life with her 20,000 TikTok followers. After the murder, statements of support poured into social media, where Brianna is referred to as a “beautiful angel” and “beautiful girl”.

The police still have no evidence to say that Ghey was the victim of a hate crime, write The Guardian.

The parents of the three youths involved were all in court for most of the 18-day trial. Brianna’s parents followed the case from the audience gallery.

Day after day they had to hear the gruesome details of their daughter’s murder.

Neither of the two defendants showed signs of remorse in court, according to their mother Ester Ghay.

– Thinking about how scared my otherwise fearless daughter must have been when she was alone in the park with what she thought was her friend will haunt me forever, she told the media afterwards.

The family says Brianna leaves a huge void. At the same time, they want to emphasize how proud they were of their daughter.

– She was strong, fearless and unique. She wanted to be identified as a girl and she wanted to dress in a girl’s uniform at school and yes, she just did. She did not let prejudice stop her, says the mother Manchester Evening News.

After her daughter’s death, her mother Esther Ghay started the campaign “Peace at Mind” to direct the focus on young people’s mental health and to provide training to teachers on how to better meet struggling youth.

When she spoke to the media after the verdict, she appealed for action:

– Brianna struggled mentally. She struggled with self-harm and eating disorders like so many other young people. Now something must be done.
