An unknown gunman killed three people and injured at least 11 people at two schools in Aracruz, Brazil. Two of the victims were teachers, the other was a student. The culprit has disappeared.
The gunman opened fire for the first time at a primary and secondary public school in the southeastern city. He did the same at a private school down the street.
The perpetrator can be seen on surveillance footage, but is difficult to identify because his face was covered. According to the authorities, the victim is a teenager. It is suspected that he is a student of one of the schools. It is being investigated whether the perpetrator was also helped by others.
Tragedy
President-elect Lula da Silva called the shooting a tragedy. “I express my support for the governor as he investigates the matter and wish him strength to comfort the communities around the two affected schools,” Lula said.
School shootings are generally rare in Brazil, but there have been a few in recent years. For example, there was one two years ago shot in a school in São Paulo. Five students, a teacher and an administrative assistant were killed. The perpetrators committed suicide.
