There is no shortage of criticism against social networks. This is especially the case of Instagram, accused of harming the mental health of adolescents.
Around forty states in the USA have filed complaints against Meta‘s platforms.
The parent company of WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram has decided to react.
Under parental supervision
She announced the creation of Teen accounts to protect minor users of the platform from dangers.
The group’s vice president said the upcoming major update should give parents peace of mind.
These Teen accounts will be implemented first in the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada and Australia, then in France by the end of the year.
Teen accounts will be private by default, restricting who contacts them and what content is visible. Parents will have supervision tools available regarding the content, messages or friends with whom the child shares content.
Prove your age
It will be possible for teenagers known as influencers to go public, but only with parental authorization.
Additionally, if a Teen account changes their date of birth to circumvent the restrictions, they will be asked to prove their age.
Note that elected officials in several countries are currently working on bills to protect children.
For example, in Australia, the country will soon set a minimum age, between 14 and 16 years old, for using social networks.
