Ted Ligety: A Skiing Legend Inducted into Utah Sports Hall of Fame

September 18 will be Ted Ligetythe two-time US Olympic gold medalist and former athlete of the Stifel U.S. Alpine Ski Teams, was inducted into the Utah Sports Hall of Fame at the prestigious Little America Hotel in Salt Lake City, Utah. In doing so, he joins a list of outstanding personalities, including the Norwegian ski star Stone Eriksenthe basketball coach Dave Rosethe fencer Julie Thompson Seal and the sports journalist Tom Wharton count from the year 2023.

At just 10 years old, Ligety’s passion for skiing began at the then-famous Park City Mountain Resort. He continued his education at Park City’s Winter Sports School, where he had the opportunity to perfect his skiing skills at the same time. At just 19, he made his 2003 Ski World Cup giant slalom debut at his home resort in Utah.

The alpine combination and in particular the giant slalom became the disciplines in which Ligety particularly excelled. He was able to claim a gold medal in combined at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin. He celebrated his first major triumph in the Ski World Cup in 2006 in Yongpyong, Korea. He went on to dominate this competition and was often referred to as “Mr. GS”. He secured five Giant Slalom Crystal Globes between 2008 and 2014 and was crowned World Giant Slalom Champion in 2011 and 2013.

He underlined his talent again at the Sochi 2014 Olympics when he secured the gold medal in the giant slalom. Another highlight was winning his fifth world title in 2015.

With a total of 25 Alpine World Cup victories, two Olympic gold medals and five World Championship gold medals Ted Ligety undoubtedly one of the most outstanding ski racers ever for the Stifel U.S. Alpine Ski Team have started. His induction into the Hall of Fame is therefore only a logical consequence of his impressive career.
