This is Tecnovax and it plans to deliver 300,000 doses of vaccine in the coming weeks to prevent the presence of the disease.
(NAP) Following the confirmation of the presence of cases of Infectious Equine Encephalomyelitis (EI), Tecnovax began a special production campaign with the aim of supplying the demand for vaccines to control the disease that had not occurred in Argentina for more than 35 years, reported the Tecnovax laboratory.
The initiative was launched after learning of the epidemiological emergency situation declared by SENASA (National Agri-Food Health and Quality Service), after confirming the presence of the Infectious Encephalomyelitis virus in Argentina.
“At Tecnovax, we keep an important bank of antigens within our biosafety facilities to respond to pandemic outbreaks. Our greatest efforts are focused on delivering at least 300,000 doses of vaccines in the coming weeks to respond to the enormous demand for vaccines that we are receiving from the community,” said Diego La Torre, CEO of the company.
About Equine Infectious Encephalomyelitis
The World Health Organization (WHO) points out that among the threats to international public health are zoonotic diseases such as Equine Encephalitis, which are of great importance due to their high potential to cross borders, among which are recorded: Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE), Western Equine Encephalitis (WEE), Venezuelan Equine Encephalitis (VEE) and West Nile Encephalitis (WNE).
Equine encephalitis constitutes a group of viral diseases transmitted from birds to mosquitoes, and these in turn infect horses and humans.
The disease has high mortality rates and can be prevented through vaccination. The case fatality rate can vary from 20 to 90%.
These viruses affect several vertebrates, including horses and people, which are terminal hosts and are transmitted by vectors, mainly mosquitoes, during the summer.
The disease had not been reported in Argentina since 1988. During the last seventy-two (72) hours, Senasa received notifications of suspected horses with nervous symptoms and mortality in the provinces of Corrientes, Entre Ríos, Santa Fe and Córdoba. TO
Furthermore, the veterinary service of Uruguay also reported that they received suspicions with similar symptoms in horses.
Due to the regional epidemiological situation, as well as the time of year and the climatic and ecological conditions with a large presence of the vector, in Argentina, the stock of horses is estimated at 3 million animals.
Vaccination against Equine Infectious Encephalomyelitis was no longer mandatory in 2019. Since then, the use of the vaccine has decreased to 5,000 doses per month, consequently reducing the number of vaccine units available.
