Tecno kicked off MWC 2023 in style. She brought here to show a new display technology, thanks to which you don’t have to deal with the color of your smartphone covers. The back of the prototype is like a chameleon. In the mobile application, you simply set the color you want right now.

Tecno calls the principle Chameleon Coloring Technology. Under the back cover of the phone is a special layer of prisms that change their orientation when the electric field changes. And thanks to the precise control of the direction of movement of the prisms, this material can reflect light of different wavelengths, which makes it possible to create different rainbow patterns on the back. It is therefore not a display, so the back of the phone does not shine in any way, it just reflects light, which it colors at the same time.

You can manually set one of 1,600 different color shades in the mobile app. However, the color of the back can change automatically depending on the state of the phone, e.g. when there is an incoming call, an unread notification, an empty battery or when playing music or videos. It only takes 0.03 seconds to change the color on the back, while having an almost negligible battery drain. One hundred color changes a day has the same energy demand as watching five minutes of videos.

Of course, the colors of the back cannot be changed indefinitely. The technology used has a lifespan of two million color changes, but that means users can use it virtually without any restrictions. In Tecno’s presentation, however, it is still only a prototype device, but it is very likely that this technology could soon peek into the brand’s commonly available phones.

After all, it wouldn’t be the first time that Tecno smartphones change the color of their backs. The back of the Camon 19 Pro Mondrian Edition from last September changed shades according to the intensity of the ambient light. The brand is also exhibiting this model at the MWC fair, but we have to wait until tomorrow for live demonstrations of the “chameleon”. Tecno will be showing it at its booth alongside the newly announced Tecno Phantom V Fold.
