Tecno Pova 5 Pro: The Latest Smartphone to Copy iPhone Design
In recent years, Chinese brands have been continuously copying the design of iPhones. However, this year, we are witnessing an interesting turn of events. While we were mocking Unihertz at the MWC trade show earlier this year for imitating the iconic iPhone, it seems clear now that Chinese brands will not be the last to do so.
Last week, information about the upcoming Infinix smartphone leaked, prompting a response from the CEO of Nothing, suggesting that it might be time to call the lawyers. However, it is Tecno, a brand that also operates in the Czech market, that is actually releasing a similar phone. Unfortunately, this new Tecno device will likely not make its way to Europe.
The Tecno Pova 5 Pro is the successor to the previously released Tecno Pova 5 model, with the Pro variant featuring LED lights on the back. Similar to Unihertz, Tecno believes that standard lighting is not enough, and the RGB diodes on the back can display nine different colors. These diodes serve not only for notifications but also as a visual enhancement for gaming, which is the primary focus of this mobile device.
The phone boasts a 6.78-inch Full HD+ display with an IPS panel and a 120Hz refresh rate, as well as an under-display fingerprint scanner. The display is protected by tempered glass, while the rest of the body is made of plastic.
Powering the Tecno Pova 5 Pro is the new MediaTek Dimensity 6080 processor with 5G support, featuring eight cores. It is accompanied by 8GB of RAM and either 128GB or 256GB of storage space. The RAM can be expanded by an additional 8GB allocation from the storage, and further expanded with a memory card. The phone also includes a USB-C connector and a headphone jack.
The camera setup on the back is what one would expect from a phone primarily aimed at young users who want to play games and occasionally take photos. There is only one usable sensor with a resolution of 50MP and brightness, while the second sensor is only used for depth of field.
The Tecno Pova 5 Pro is equipped with a 5,000mAh battery and supports fast 68W charging. Compared to the Tecno Pova 5 model, this is a slight downgrade, as the cheaper sibling only supports 45W charging but has a larger 6,000mAh battery capacity. Additionally, the Pova 5 model features a slightly inferior processor (Helio G99 without 5G support) and, as mentioned earlier, does not have LED lights on the back. Otherwise, the specifications remain the same.
Tecno has announced that the phone will only be available in selected markets in Asia and South America. Therefore, LED lights on the back will continue to be offered exclusively by the Nothing Phone in the European market.
How has the trend of Chinese brands imitating the iPhone design impacted the smartphone market?
Tecno seems to have taken inspiration from the iPhone design for their latest smartphone, the Tecno Pova 5 Pro. This follows a trend of Chinese brands imitating the popular Apple device.
While Chinese brands have been known to copy the iPhone design in the past, this year it seems that they are not the only ones doing so. At the MWC trade show earlier this year, Unihertz was mocked for imitating the iPhone, but now it appears that Tecno is also joining in.
Recently, information about an upcoming Infinix smartphone leaked, which prompted a response from the CEO of Nothing, suggesting that legal action may be necessary. However, it is Tecno, a brand that is also present in the Czech market, that will actually be releasing a similar phone.
The Tecno Pova 5 Pro is an upgraded version of the previously released Tecno Pova 5 model. It features LED lights on the back, similar to what Unihertz has done with their phone.
Unfortunately for European consumers, it appears that the Tecno Pova 5 Pro will not be available in Europe. However, for those interested in a phone with a design reminiscent of the iPhone, this may be an option worth considering.
“The Tecno Pova 5 Pro seems like a promising device with its impressive specs and features. Can’t wait to get my hands on one!”
