“Business Analytics”: Interested parties can study dual at the THWS and work in the company
The possibility of a dual degree offers students and companies numerous advantages
Data analysis to achieve optimal business outcomes: This is the goal of business analytics. The faculty of economics at the Technical University of Würzburg-Schweinfurt will offer its bachelor’s degree in “Business Analytics” from the winter semester 2023/2024. The advantages: The students are on the safe side with the interlinked offer of theory and practice – be it in the “combined study” with a degree and vocational training or via the “study with in-depth practical experience” with an application-oriented study orientation in and with a company.
As future generalists with an interest in business administration, mathematics, statistics and computer science, the “students” acquire a wide range of theoretical specialist, methodological and social skills. At the same time, they can apply these in practice and implement them in the companies with which they have contracted their dual studies.
The dual study program at the THWS is currently being implemented according to the profile feature “dual” of the Bavarian Study Accreditation Ordinance. The first two courses of this type include the Bachelor’s courses in Business Analytics (B.Sc.) and Hydrogen Technology (BEng.). There are two variants :
The combined course can be completed after four and a half years with a combination of study and training.
The degree with in-depth practical experience includes up to 66 more weeks of practical work in contracting companies in addition to the practical semester during the degree. The bachelor’s degree can be completed after three and a half years.
Peculiarities of dual studies
The dual study program is characterized by a combination of theory (studies) and practice in the company. The students spend the lecture-free times or the practical semester in the partner company. In addition, they relate to practice and “their” company through adapted examination and study performances during the lecture period. In some modules (e.g. in project and IT management or in business analytics 1 and 2) you deal with tasks from your company in coordination with the professor. Module 24 allows dual students to take part in so-called “transfer colloquia”: Instead of taking the specialist elective module (FWPM), the students exchange their practical experiences over a period of four semesters in order to proceed optimally and effectively with their activities in the company to be able to
The practical seminar is carried out in the contracting company and includes at least one presentation from the concrete practical application with a transfer of theoretical knowledge to the solution of practical tasks. The final bachelor thesis also deals with a topic from the company and thus concludes the dual study program.
In order to coordinate the practical times in the company and the theoretical phases in the university as best as possible, the contact persons in the company coordinate with the officers for dual studies at the university and the respective course directors. And if it turns out during the course of the course that the dual variant no longer seems feasible for the student, the step into a “normal” bachelor’s degree in “Business Analytics” can be made.
A dual degree offers numerous advantages:
– More practical experience: The students are involved in the company and apply their academic knowledge directly in practice.
– Career prospects: After completing the dual course of study, the graduates have an academic degree and professional experience. This gives them optimal prospects of subsequent employment.
– Financial support: Many companies that offer dual courses of study support “their” students financially.
– Building a network: The participants have the opportunity to build a student and professional network.
– Flexibility: Students have the opportunity to optimally coordinate their working hours and studies.
