Two days before Luna-25 is due to descend to the lunar surface, the Russian lander suffers a technical defect. This has been announced by space agency Roskosmos.

Luna-25 launched last Thursday and entered lunar orbit last Wednesday. The lander was scheduled to descend to the surface on August 21.

According to the organization, an “abnormal situation” has arisen with the spacecraft today. This happened in the run-up to a maneuver that must bring Luna-25 into the correct orbit in order to descend to the predetermined landing spot. The shortcoming “prevented the execution of the maneuver with the specified parameters,” Roskosmos said.

The Russian agency writes that specialists are analyzing the situation.

The Russian spacecraft was scheduled to land near the moon’s south pole on Monday. Several countries are exploring that part of the moon, as water and precious elements are likely to be found there.

In recent days, the lunar lander has sent its first photos, including of the crater Zeeman, one of the deepest craters in the southern hemisphere of the moon. Luna-25 would also have registered the impact of a micrometeorite.
