Teatro Real Awards Honor Stage Directors and Countertenor

Madrid, May 29. The stage directors Deborah Warner and Calixto Bieito and the countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo have been awarded this Monday in the second edition of the Teatro Real Awards in Madrid in a ceremony held in the Madrid operatic coliseum.

“I have been extremely happy working here”, remarked the British woman when collecting her distinction for “Billy Budd” and “Peter Grimes” and thanking the entire team for “making this space the best place to work, for the enormous care towards the artists and the creative process, for putting all the means at your disposal and, at the same time, making you feel like a family”.

Like her, Bieito has celebrated the “art space” that the Teatro Real has become thanks to its staff. “Opera is the art of the future”, added the man from Burgos, recognized for his work at the service of “Wozzeck”, “Die Soldaten”, “Carmen” and, more recently, “El ángel de fuego”.

The third and last artistic award went to the American Anthony Roth Costanzo, who played Apollo in “Death in Venice” and Armindo in “Partenope.”

“I love the Teatro Real, not only for the quality of its music, theater and art, which they do at the highest level, but for the people who are and are like a family and make you feel part of it”, has insisted the countertenor, according to statements collected in the press release.

Along with these awards, the other three have been delivered, which, at an institutional level, were announced a few days ago, including that of Andrés Máspero, who culminates his work this season after thirteen years at the helm of the Teatro Real Main Choir , and Fernando Palacios, adviser to Real Junior since its creation.

The Real’s third prize in this category went to the institution’s musical director, Ivor Bolton, who dedicated it to the orchestra, “which I have seen evolve over the years until it is today among the best in Europe.”

The evening featured Anne Igartiburu as master of ceremonies, as well as the performance of Ruth Costanzo who, accompanied on piano by Bryan Wagorn, has performed arias from and songs by Georg Friedrich Händel, Franz Liszt, Fernando Obradors, George Gershwin and Philip Glass. EFE
