The Prometeo Theater (also known as Arena Theater[1] the Round Theater[2]) is a theater located south of the complex of the House of Ecuadorian Culture (CCE) in the city of Quito, next to El Arbolito park and in front of El Ejido park. It was designed by the architects Oswaldo Muñoz Mariño, Agustín and Fabián Patiño in 1966.[3]and inaugurated on March 10, 1977[4][5]. Since 2022, the administration will be carried out by the Pichincha Nucleus of the CCE.[6].

The theater was originally designed by architect Oswaldo Muñoz Mariño[7], who proposed this project to Benjamín Carrión for the House of Ecuadorian Culture[2].

The Prometeo Theater was inaugurated on the night of March 10, 1977 by Dr. Galo René Pérez[8]who was he at that time (1975-1979)[9] the president of the House of Ecuadorian Culture. The play that inaugurated the theater was Volpone, by the English Renaissance playwright Ben Jonson[8][10][11]which was represented by the National Theater Company[8].

Among the first theater groups that performed at Prometeo were Mojiganga, TAF, Compañía Ecuatoriana de Teatro and Taller de Teatro.[12].

Description[editar]

Vista lateral.

The theater occupies 663 m² of surface[2]and has a capacity for 270 people[13]. It’s concrete.

It is often described as the only 360° theater in the country[13]because the stage occupies the center of the interior space and is completely surrounded by seats for spectators, which is why it is an arena theater. Two opposing hyperbolic paraboloids are born from two beams and expand giving it its characteristic appearance and thus converting it into a helical amphitheater[10].
