Teatro Círculo denounces domestic violence with disco music

Domestic violence is a problem that plagues society and that during the months of the pandemic was exacerbated throughout the world.

And since the Hispanic community is not exempt from this evil, the playwright louis knight considered it imperative to address this social suffering with a theatrical production.

An entirely Hispanic cast composes this montage.

“Theater, basically, has to serve as a weapon of information. That has always been my goal in terms of theater: if there is no message, why do it? And as for the issue of domestic violence; look, I’m Puerto Rican and in Puerto Rico there have been many cases of femicides. I think that this arises from the need to be able to send a message and that people can understand that this issue has to be talked about and must be confronted, “explains its author.

The play Love to Love You, Baby: the story of Dolores Verano is a piece that portrays a crucial moment in the life of an Afro-Puerto Rican woman who is played by the actress of Puerto Rican descent: Lorraine Velez.

“I am playing the role of Dolores Verano, who is a very simple woman with a very big heart. And the pity is that she is a victim of domestic violence, so she has a very bad time. In the play we are dealing with her world, in what happens now and what comes after an event that happens in her life. And for her salvation is the music of Donna Summer. And this character is the one who finally saves her, “Vélez details.

Donna Summer’s music is the protagonist’s salvation.

The cast of the play is completed by two actors who give life to the various characters that make up the male universe of the protagonist.

“Dolores Verano’s story sheds light on domestic violence but with a little hope and I think that’s what’s important. Donna Summer’s music is hope for this woman, Dolores,” she says. Ferdinand Contreras.

While for Francis Mateo: “There is also the issue of mental health, which is very important. There is also abuse –whether towards a son, daughter or wife–. So this work talks about all this, not having an answer but looking for what can be done” .

Lorraine Vélez plays Dolores Verano (summer).

Love to Love You, Baby: the story of Dolores Verano performs for a short season at the Circle Theater on the East Side.
